About Science In Motion

Hi! Our Science in Motion: Wakeboarding class is designed around something we love to do at Wake The Wild—take the things kids are naturally doing while riding and dive deeper into the why and how behind them through STEM.

Each week will include a 30–40 minute STEM lab where we’ll take concepts they experience on the water—like force, motion, speed, balance, buoyancy, resistance, momentum, and even the shape of the wake—and explore the science behind what’s actually happening.

Then we take that science onto the water! The remainder of the two-hour class will be spent riding, where students can actually feel and experience the concepts we’ve been discussing.

One of the things that makes this class especially unique is that students will be coached by 4-time World Champion wakeboarder, Kirby Liesmann. Kirby will work with students at their individual skill level, whether they’re learning to get up for the first time or progressing toward their next skill. Our goal is for every student to receive personal instruction, feedback, and plenty of time on the water while building confidence as a rider.

That combination is really what Science in Motion is all about: learn it in the lab, experience it while riding, and begin to understand the science behind something you already love to do.

About The Wake Lab

The Wake Lab is a brand-new Wake The Wild experience designed to take students beyond wakeboarding and explore what it takes to grow as an athlete, leader, and entrepreneur.

Led by 4-time World Champion wakeboarder Kirby Liesmann, students will learn from someone who has experienced firsthand what it takes to compete at the highest level, build a career around the sport, and turn a passion for wakeboarding into something bigger.

Each week will combine time in the Lab with plenty of time on the water. Students will explore Kirby’s Pillars of Success: Fitness, Nutrition, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing & Media—learning how each one plays a role both in athletics and in life. And they won’t just learn from Kirby.

Throughout the semester, we’ll bring in guest speakers from the wake community, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, and business professionals to share their real-world experiences. We want students learning directly from people who have taken their passions, talents, and ideas and turned them into careers, businesses, and opportunities.

Then we take those lessons onto the water.

Students will spend the remainder of class riding, progressing their wakeboarding skills, encouraging one another, and receiving coaching and feedback from Kirby.

Throughout the 8-week experience, students will also work together to apply what they’re learning about leadership, teamwork, communication, marketing, entrepreneurship, and event planning toward a real-world capstone.

The semester culminates in a student-led cable park competition. Students will help plan, promote, organize, and execute the event—putting the skills they’ve developed throughout The Wake Lab into action in a real-world setting.

That’s what The Wake Lab is all about: develop the rider, build the leader, and discover where your passion can take you.
