Science in the Swamp is designed around something we love to do at Wake The Wild—take the things students are naturally seeing and experiencing in the world around them and dive deeper into the why and how behind them.

Each week, students will head into Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary to explore, observe, ask questions, and experience science firsthand. Along the way, we’ll dive into concepts surrounding ecosystems, food webs, native plants and wildlife, animal behavior, adaptations, water, conservation, and the incredible connections that keep this environment thriving.

Students will also have opportunities to learn about the real conservation work and research happening within the sanctuary, giving them a glimpse into what it means to study and protect Florida’s natural ecosystems.

Rather than learning about the natural world from a textbook, students will be standing right in the middle of it—making observations, discovering connections, and beginning to understand the science behind what they see around them.

That’s what Science in the Swamp is all about: explore it in the field, dive deeper into the science behind it, and discover how everything in an ecosystem is connected.
