We believe the most powerful learning happens in the field—working alongside real scientists, contributing to real conservation research. Our Shark Tagging Expeditions give students and families the opportunity to become citizen scientists, gaining hands-on experience in marine biology, data collection, and environmental stewardship.

These expeditions are offered through an exceptional network of research and conservation partners including Surf Skate Science , NSU Shark Research, the Guy Harvey Foundation.

Together, these programs allow students to move beyond textbooks and screens and step directly into the world of marine research—learning how science informs policy, protects ecosystems, and shapes the future of our oceans.

Shark tagging is a critical research method used by marine scientists to study shark movement, behavior, migration patterns, and population health. During these expeditions, participants assist scientists in safely catching, measuring, and tagging sharks before releasing them back into the ocean.

Using acoustic, satellite, and archival tags, researchers collect long-term data that helps protect sharks as apex predators and maintain healthy marine ecosystems. The process follows strict scientific and ethical guidelines and is designed to minimize stress on the animals while maximizing conservation impact.

Students gain firsthand experience with:

  • Field research and data collection

  • Species identification and shark biology

  • Marine technology and tracking systems

  • Ethical wildlife research and conservation practices

Why Families Choose Shark Tagging with Wake the Wild and Surf Skate Science

  • Authentic, real-world marine science experiences

  • Direct collaboration with top research institutions

  • Hands-on learning that builds confidence and scientific literacy

  • Meaningful conservation impact through citizen science

  • Accessible options for homeschool, microschool, and scholarship families

Whether your child dreams of becoming a marine biologist or simply wants to understand and protect the ocean, Shark Tagging Expeditions with Surf Skate Science and Wake the Wild offer an unforgettable, purpose-driven learning experience—one that turns curiosity into impact.

Nova Southeastern University – Guy Harvey Institute & Foundation

At Nova Southeastern University (NSU), the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the NSU Guy Harvey Research Institute, in collaboration with the Guy Harvey Foundation, are at the forefront of biological oceanography and shark research.

NSU’s shark tagging program tracks the migration patterns of ten different shark species, including the elusive smooth hammerhead, generating critical data on shark movements throughout the western Atlantic Ocean. This research directly informs conservation strategies and policy decisions aimed at protecting vulnerable shark populations and the ecosystems they support.

Beyond research, NSU is deeply committed to education, access, and representation in marine science. Through outreach and inclusion-focused initiatives—such as programs designed to encourage young females of color to pursue careers in marine biology—NSU connects science with advocacy. These efforts have helped support meaningful conservation outcomes, including Florida legislation banning the importation of shark fins.

NSU’s integrated approach to research, education, and policy gives students and families a rare opportunity to contribute to real shark conservation
