About Science By The Sea
Science by the Sea is designed around something we love to do at Wake The Wild—take the things students are naturally seeing and experiencing in the world around them and dive deeper into the why and how behind them.
Each week, students will head into the field to explore Southwest Florida’s coastal environments, making observations, asking questions, and experiencing marine science firsthand.
Along the way, we’ll dive into concepts surrounding marine ecosystems, food webs, native plants and wildlife, animal behavior, adaptations, habitats, water, conservation, and the incredible connections between land and sea.
One of the things that makes this class especially unique is the opportunity to learn directly from Florida State Park Rangers—the people who work within, study, and help protect these environments every day. Students will gain firsthand insight into our local wildlife, habitats, conservation efforts, and what it takes to care for these incredible natural resources.
Rather than simply reading about marine life in a textbook, students will explore the environments where that life actually exists—searching for signs of wildlife, investigating different habitats, and discovering how each species plays a role within the larger coastal ecosystem.
That’s what Science by the Sea is all about: explore it in the field, learn from the people protecting it, and discover the science behind the world around you.

About Art By The Sea
Brand new this fall, Art by the Sea takes creativity out of the traditional classroom and into the incredible natural setting of Lovers Key State Park.
Taught by a local artist, students will explore the park each week and use what they see, hear, and experience as inspiration for their art. From the colors and textures of the coastline to native wildlife, plants, shells, water, and changing landscapes, students will learn to slow down, observe the world around them, and translate those observations into something they create.
Throughout the 10-week experience, students will experiment with a variety of artistic styles, techniques, and materials while learning about the natural environments that inspire their work. Projects are designed for a wide range of ages and abilities, giving every student the opportunity to grow as an artist and develop their own creative voice.
But Art by the Sea is about more than creating something beautiful. We want students to develop a deeper connection to and appreciation for the places they’re exploring—using art as another way to understand, celebrate, and care for the natural world.
The experience will culminate in our Art by the Sea Gala, where students will display their work and share what they’ve learned and created throughout the semester with their families and community.
